Lets say, you're having a group discussion. One about a class topic that everyone is encouraged to participate in. Then, everyone else just takes one side and decide to go against one person. Is that person going to ever want to participate again? No. So lets all just take a step back and decide; do we want the other people to participate ever again? Probably. How can we make them feel comfortable in the situation? Well, for starters, lets stop making stabs at them, telling them they are wrong, and LISTEN!
Critical thinking, what does that mean to you? Thinking about thinking, having those deep thoughts about a subject. Having deep thoughts, not just the first thing that comes to mind, but really taking the time to understand exactly what this thing is. If your job was to help me understand how to critically think, would you poke and prod at me and tell me I was wrong? Look at me and say no do this no do this? Isn't critical thinking going to be slightly different for each person? Aren't we going to all have our own ways of going about finding an answer for something. Just like there are many different ways to drive to the same exact place, you can take many routes and get there. None of them are "wrong" just different. So, if your job is to help us think critically, please guide. Don't tell me I am wrong, don't criticize me for having my own opinion. By doing that, you are proving to me that you do not have an open mind that is willing to think from another perspective. I won't ever come back to your class. In fact, I am already tempted to tell you that.
